General Purpose: Reports to the Chief of Student Health and Athletic Medicine at Yale Health. Serves as Primary Care Clinician for varsity athletes. Diagnoses, treats and helps prevent sports related injuries for Yale athletes.
Responsibilities include the following: Diagnoses, treats, and helps prevent injuries and illness that occur as a result of or impact participation in varsity athletic activities.
Establish standards, in consultation and collaboration with Primary Care Sports Medicine colleagues and specialty consultants, for medical care within the specialty and assist in the development of productivity and quality assurance measures.
Works closely with the Deans and Heads of College as well as with other stakeholders including, but not limited to, Orthopedics and Athletics. Interpersonal skills, collegiality and ability to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team are critical characteristics for success in this position.
Works closely with athletic trainers. Supports and supervises the clinical care provided by athletic trainers while appreciating that the trainers are employed by the Department of Athletics.
Documents encounters in the EMR including diagnosis and proposed plan of care. Updates patient’s active problems, medication list and health maintenance at each encounter. Monitors patient’s compliance with the treatment plan and varies plan according to patient’s responses. Provides on-going emotional support to patient and family as needed.
Meets departmental standards for quality of clinical care, productivity and service. Follows practice guidelines established by the department and Yale Health.
Full-time, 37.50 hours, generally M-F, flexible schedule. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays/recess also required. On-site coverage at assigned varsity sports events and athletic training sites required.
Required Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited medical school. Graduation from an accredited residency in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or Internal Medicine/Pediatrics.
Qualifications: •Ability to work with a diverse population within a highly competitive and complex University structure. •Willingness to support staff with leadership, teaching and team building. •Strong communication skills. •Demonstrated clinical skills as attested by colleagues and supervisors. Demonstrated ability to implement developed standards of quality medical care and the monitoring and utilization of health services. •Preferred Education and Experience: Fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine. Previous experience working with adolescents and young adults, preferably in a high school or university setting.
