Clinical competence in Orthopedic Surgery requires factual knowledge and technical skills in the preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative care of patients. The orthopedic surgeon should also be able to perform amputation, anthrotomy, anthrodesis, arthroplasty (including hemiarthroplasty of the complicated factures and dislocations. They orthopedic surgeon show is able to perform both Arthroscopy of the knee and the shoulder. The Physician (Orthopedic Surgeon) duties consist of but are not limited to the following: Admission, consultation, work up, preoperative and postoperative care of surgical patients. Postoperative care to correct or treat various general conditions, illnesses and injuries. Complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions. Operates or directs the operation of fluoroscopic equipment for a medical procedure. Makes preliminary diagnosis; directs, prescribes or provides treatment, arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required. Actively participates in Emergency and On-Call schedule. Provide comprehensive general care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up services to patients. Management of patients during their inpatient course, using consultants when appropriate and performs inpatient consultations on patients from other services. Conducts outpatient clinics, reviews patient's medications, diet, course of therapy, adherence to management plan and patient observations; modifies management plan as indicated; and instructs and counsels patients as required. Serves as a consultant to primary care physicians and accepts referrals and outpatient consultations from other providers. Functions in a teaching capacity by educating others (patients, staff, trainees, and/or seminar participants, etc) in the assessment, treatment, management and evaluation of general disorders. Refers patients as appropriate; works closely with allied health professionals; and participates in the Surgical Department Quality Assurance and Peer Review programs. Effectively communicates with and utilizes other disciplines (e.g., nursing, medicine) to facilitate appropriate care for Veterans. Participates effectively in team meetings and committee conferences. Collaborates with divergent multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care. Meets the need of customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers and all Medical Center staff in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner, and provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
