The Female Athlete Program Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital offers one year of specialty training in the treatment of female athletes. This fellowship is open to those who have completed a Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine or Endocrinology. We are currently accepting applications for the 2022-2023 fellowship year. The Female Athlete Program is made up of an interdisciplinary clinical care team of physicians, surgeons, APCs, dietitians, and sports psychology clinicians. We belong to the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance and have a large, interdisciplinary clinical research team. The Fellowship will provide training in diagnosing, treating, and comprehensively managing the health of the female athlete. The clinician will become proficient in evaluation of the female athlete triad/relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), eating disorders, bone health, sports-related endocrine issues, and other female athlete-related sports medicine injuries. The clinician will also have training in male athlete endocrine concerns, issues pertaining to transgender and gender diverse athletes, nutrition evaluations, mental health evaluation and management, and general endocrine and gynecologic care of female athletes. Clinical research opportunities are available and can be supported by the Program. Fellows will be responsible for completing at least one research project during their fellowship year and must be an active contributor to Program research. Three letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae, medical school transcript of grades, and ECFMG certificate (if applicable) will be required, along with the completed application. About Female Athlete Program - Boston Children's Hospital
The Female Athlete Program cares for and champions girls and women in sport with interdisciplinary clinical care and cutting-edge research. Our definition of “female” non-exhaustively includes transgender females as well as those assigned female at birth, irrespective of their current gender identify or expression. We support the increased participation, retention, wellbeing, and performance of all female athletes, including LGBTA+, black, indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and para-athletes. We are a part of the Division of Sports Medicine at BCH and are an Innovation Hub for the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance. We are for athletes of all ages and experience, from professionals to novices, to help them attain health at the top of their game. We take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing sports injury and recovery in female athletes. We assess and support the whole athlete – exercise habits, hormone balance, nutritional needs – to ensure optimal health and peak performance. Our multidisciplinary team consists of experts in sports medicine who understand the importance of sports in an athlete’s life.
