The Student Health Center is a Department of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital serving the students of Georgetown University. Our physicians provide high quality urgent and primary care to our students in support of the core mission of cura personalis—caring for the whole person. Georgetown University Athletics is an NCAA Division 1 athletics program with over 700 athletes and 26 varsity sports. This position is as an embedded primary care physician dedicated to the health and wellness of student athletes. This is a fulltime position with 50/50 split between primary care in athletics and sports medicine for general student population at the Student Health Center.
The incumbent will be a MedStar employee and credentialed as clinical staff of the MedStar Georgetown Student Health Center. The physician will also be able to moonlight in the MedStar Urgent Cares as desired for extra compensation. The position reports to the Medical Director of the MedStar Georgetown Student Health Center, a department of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. If you would like to work with gifted athletes in a setting that lives the care for the whole person from coach to athletic director to school president this is the place for you. This job has two primary components, to serve as primary care provider for student athletes at Georgetown University and to serve as a sports medicine consultant within the student health center. 50% of time will be allotted to work within the Georgetown University Athletics Department caring for student athletes in the athletic training room, physician game coverage, developing and implementing protocols, serving as a resource for all athletic trainers providing care for student athletes and collaborating with other University staff in overseeing the health and wellness of student athletes. 50% of time will be spent clinic consultation for musculoskeletal, concussion and other sports medicine needs of the general student population at the Student Health Center as well as Medical oversight of athletic training and Health policies for the Club Sports program within the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsibilities include:
•Serve as the team physician while being a role model for professionalism and following an evidence-based medicine approach to care.
•Serve as Team physician for any conference or NCAA tournaments hosted by Georgetown Athletics, which includes overseeing the coverage and emergency action plans of the university.
•Determine clearance status for all athletes participating in Georgetown athletics.
•Serve as an advocate for the health and wellbeing of student athletes
•Collaborate with Athletic Trainers, Strength and Conditioning staff, Nutritionist and Director of Sports Psychology in their work with student athletes.
•Conduct a primary care clinic to manage or assist in referral to specialists for all the health care needs of student athletes.
•Participate in training for all sports medicine staff in emergency action plans and evidence-based guidelines for care of athletes.
•Help with review and revise health protocols and procedures for the athletics department as well as Requirements: Candidate must be a board certified/board eligible Primary Care Sports Medicine trained Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine physician, preferably with experience working in college medicine.
Excellent clinical skills and an interest in the healthcare and development of the college aged population.
Strong preference for a candidate with 2 years of post-fellowship experience working in Sports Medicine.
