Job Purpose: Provide applicable sports medicine and primary medical care to eligible University of Wyoming (UW) students including, but not limited to, intercollegiate (NCAA) student-athletes, rodeo students and members of the spirit squad. Provide emergency services as a sideline physician for applicable athletic activities/competitions/events. Provide medical supervision for staff athletic trainers.
Essential Responsibilities: Provide high quality sports medicine and primary medical care to eligible UW students. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: •Examining, diagnosing, treating and monitoring acute and chronic illnesses; •Examining, diagnosing, treating and monitoring concussions as outlined in the UW Athletic Department Sports Concussion Education and Management Plan; •Ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests; •Prescribing applicable medications/pharmaceuticals to treat concussions/illnesses; •Conducting sports physicals as needed; •Coordinating/communicating student-athlete plans of care with applicable department coaches/staff, sports medicine personnel, parents, etc.; •Communicating with student-athletes in a supportive and comprehensive manner; •Collaborating/making appropriate referrals with outside providers/specialists regarding student-athlete plans of care to ensure both quality and continuity of care; •Coordinating care within health plan rules of the student-athlete (e.g., in-network, referral requirements, etc.); •Remaining current with medical developments, procedures and treatments; •Maintaining patient records in compliance with UW policy; and •Maintaining compliance with confidentiality/privacy polices/procedures.
Perform administrative tasks including, but not limited to, supervising and training of health care professionals and students (including Athletic Trainers) and serving on Athletic Department/campus committees.
Perform additional duties including, but not limited to, the following: •Maintaining and promoting of AAAHC standards; •Working weekends, evenings and holidays (as needed); •Providing applicable medical event coverage for away football competitions including post-season events (e.g., Bowl Games, etc.); •Providing applicable medical event coverage for the Mountain West Basketball Tournament (currently hosted in Las Vegas, NV) and other basketball post-season tournaments (e.g., NIT, NCAA, etc.); and •Providing applicable medical event coverage at home competitions for football, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, wrestling and other competitions/events as determined by the Director of Athletics/Designee.
Type of Leadership, Supervisory, or Management Responsibilities and Authority: •Medical supervision of athletic trainers. This position will not be responsible for performance evaluations, hiring/firing determinations, salary determinations or scheduling.
Required Education, Experience:
MD or DO Degree from a US Based Institution
Required Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licensures for this Position:
This position requires a State of Wyoming Medical License.
This position requires board certification or eligibility in internal medicine, family medicine or emergency medicine.
This position requires a DEA registration.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with concussion management.
Experience with emergency care.
Experience working with the collegiate student-athlete population.
Completion of a Sports Medicine Fellowship.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
This position requires the ability to stand, sit, walk, and requires the use of the hands, eyes and ears to evaluate, diagnose and treat medical issues.
