Emory Sports Medicine is seeking highly motivated applicants interested in future careers in Academic Sports Medicine to serve as Chief Fellow of the Emory Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program during the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year. Applicants will have successfully completed an ACGME accredited Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship prior to matriculation in this unique fellowship year. Candidates from any primary specialty (PM&R, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine) are encouraged to apply. The Chief Fellow serves as a junior faculty member within the Department of Orthopaedics and is compensated at their corresponding PGY level at Emory University. Graduates whom have done a chief fellow position at the prestigious Emory Sports Medicine fellowship will be among the most sought after fellow graduates in the country.
The Emory Sports Medicine Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship accepts three first-year fellows each academic year, with an additional 2nd-year fellow serving in the Chief Fellow role. The Chief Fellow will work closely with the fellowship program directors and program coordinator to oversee the educational curriculum for the 3 first-year fellows, and lead Emory Sports Medicine educational programming for 27 faculty, 5 fellows, athletic training residents and many learners. This includes organizing monthly grand rounds sessions, and assisting with the logistics for monthly journal clubs, fellowship didactic sessions, the ultrasound curriculum, and the Annual Emory Sports Medicine CME/CEU meeting. The weekly responsibilities of the Chief Fellow include protected research and administrative time, independent sports medicine clinics, and supervised clinical experiences learning from the program directors and faculty across Emory Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in accordance with their professional goals and areas of specific interest.
The Chief Fellow will be actively involved in team coverage with both community outreach and professional teams. They will serve as the primary team physician for a local Atlanta High School and College team. Advanced team physician opportunities are also available with the NFL Atlanta Falcons, NBA Atlanta Hawks, WNBA Atlanta Dream, and Overtime Elite Basketball, and University athletic partnerships. The Chief Fellow may also serve primary team physician roles with the AAA Gwinnett Stripers, NBA G-League College Park SkyHawks, and Fan Controlled Football. Mass event and running medicine opportunities are available through Atlanta Track Club and USA Track and Field.
The Chief Fellow will develop skills and conduct original Sports Medicine Research in an area of their interest. Emory Orthopaedics offers robust research support and mentorship in the areas of orthobiologics, concussion, youth sports, injury prevention, and many other areas across our diverse faculty. Previous Chief Fellows have been involved with research teams with grant funding from the NIH, AMSSM, and multiple other sources. Opportunities also include working with Emory Sports Performance and Research Center (SPARC) which is home to world-class researchers and innovative technology to assess both biomechanical and brain-body relationships predisposing athletes to injury. The Chief Fellow will be funded to attend two conferences per year, with the opportunity to attend additional meetings to pursue leadership roles and present original research.
Further, the Chief Fellow will have the opportunity to advance their skillset in both diagnostic ultrasound, and advanced ultra-sound guided interventions (including exposure to US guided carpal tunnel and trigger finger releases), extra-corporeal shockwave therapy, and orthobiologic treatments such as PRP, BMAC, and MFAT procedures.
